The Washington Wrestling Club was founded in 1967 by Joe Henson. He is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and won the bronze medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1952 Olympic Games. For several years he was on the wrestling committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee, chairing the committee in 1964-68. He later served as the President of the AAU.
In 1991, the Washington Wrestling Club took 3rd at the US Sambo National Championships as a team.The WWC is proud to be associated with the American University wrestling program.

Club members range from high school to college and to post collegiate wrestlers. Club members age from 15 to 65. All skill and ability levels are welcome!
Current and former members include: Olympic medalists; Olympians; USA World Team members; Division I, II, and III, All-Americans and wrestlers; Maryland, Virginia and DC public and private school state champions and place winners; National Prep champions and all-americans; and current and former collegiate and high school coaches.
Club members also include wrestlers who have placed at Nationals in freestyle greco-roman and Sombo.
Some members also grapple, practice jui jitsu, and MMA. Ability levels range from novice to expert.
